Jasmine Colon was born and raised in the Bronx by her immigrant parents. At an early age she developed an interest in the creative arts. She often recalled writing fiction story’s, tv show scripts and a fond facisnation with storytelling. In 1992 her mother Miriam Soto was diagnosed with an incurable disease known as Scleroderma in which she fought a long battle for Ten Years. It was through this life learning experience that Jasmine decided to pursue a career in film and Telvision. She found her calling in the arts and in being able  to use media as a wayto tell her stories.

 

In 2003, she graduated from Borough of Manhattan Community College with an A.A.S degree in Corporate Communications concentrating on Television and Studio Production and after this she decided to further her education at City College. During her enrollment at City College, she started A STRUGGLE, which is a work-in progress experimental documentary about her mother’s journey with Scleroderma. Focusing on examining the disease through personal interviews with people who suffer from it, the Documentary will while combine stock footage of her own mother, to create a poetic, rhythmic and narrative story that celebrates her mother and other’s will never to give up despite life’s tragic turns.

 

It was also through City College where Jasmine began to fully understand her roles as a women Director, Writer, Editor and how limited they were in the Industry and how to combine both Art and Activism in her storytelling. In 2005, she collaborated with Chica Luna Productions. She began to intern, finding her niche as an Editor and was given the opportunity to edit two of the F-Word films, “I’m Not here” directed by Karly Beaumont and “Recuerdos” directed by Yahaira Paulino. Both films premiered at the New York International Latino Film Festival that year. After interning, she transitioned into becoming the Office Manager.In the summer of 2007 she  obtained her B.A. in Film/Video Production at City College and a year later was promoted to be the Program Manager/Writer for Sister Outsider Entertainment, in which she overlooked the companies first Multi-Media theater show about the Latina Queer experience called “Pandoras” which premiered at Theater Row in 2008. She wrote her first theater monologue piece called “Confidentiality” and was also the companies Director of Post-Production.

 

Jasmine has also worked with other constituencies such as the Queen’s Museum of Art as a video facilitator for a program called Leadership Through the Arts, and has also provided services as an Assistant Editor for Swandive Films and NYCTV. During her assistant at NYCTV she cut rough assemblies of 7 short segment shows for NY 360 that appeared on NYCTV and NBC in 2006. Her film “El Cuco” won Best Experimental at the 2007 Reel Sisters Diaspora Film Festival.

 

She is a recipient of the Latinos Producers Academy in which she participated in the 2008 & 2009 Santa Fe program as an editor for Hugo Perez feature work in progress entitled “Immaculate Conception” and Juliette Carrillo’s film “ Susperchicas. She was also an Assistant Editor to a feature film entitled “The Miracle of Spanish Harlem” which is currently seeking distribution. Jasmine has worked on serveral short films over the past years she is now currently working as an Assistant Editor / Editor for EpixHD 3 Studio Partners which is affliated with Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM Studios.
